GUIDE

Program your NFCKEY with NXP® TagWriter

No reader hardware, no software licence, no technical setup. Your phone-programmable NFCKEY with an NXP® chip can be written using the free NXP® TagWriter app, and rewritten whenever the link needs to change. Here's the full process, step by step.

Works with

NXP® NTAG® 213, NTAG® 215, NTAG® 216 and other phone-programmable NXP® chip families offered by NFCKEY.

What you can write

Links, business cards, WiFi credentials, Bluetooth pairing, email, phone numbers, geo location, plain text, SMS and app launches.

Before you begin
01
Ensure NFC is on

Enable NFC in your phone's settings. iPhones from XS onwards have it on by default.

02
Check your chip is phone-programmable

Most NXP® NTAG® variants are.

03
Not sure which chip you have?

Download NXP® TagInfo and scan your NFCKEY to identify it.

Step 01

Download the NXP® TagWriter App

The NFC TagWriter app by NXP® allows writing tags, adding business cards, storing contacts, bookmarks, pairing with Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth®, enabling hotspots, sending text messages and much more all with just a tap.

Prior to the encoding process, make sure your phone has NFC enabled in the settings.

Step 02

Open the App and Decide What Type Of Data You Want To Upload

1. Launch the app

2. Tap Write Tags

3. Tap New dataset

4. Choose what type of record you want to add. Here are some options this app offers, explained:

  • Business Card – Stores contact details. When scanned, the user can save the contact to their phone.
  • Link – Stores a URL. When scanned, it opens the website in the browser.
  • WiFi – Stores WiFi network credentials (SSID and password). Allows compatible devices to connect automatically.
  • Bluetooth – Stores Bluetooth pairing data. Enables quick device pairing.
  • Email – Creates a pre-filled email draft (recipient, subject, message).
  • Telephone Number – Stores a phone number. Prompts the user to place a call.
  • Geo Location – Stores GPS coordinates. Opens the location in a map application.
  • Launch Application – Opens a specific app installed on the device.
  • Plain Text – Stores simple readable text with no automatic action.
  • SMS – Creates a pre-filled SMS message (number and message text).

In our case, we will be adding a link to our website, so we will choose the "Link" option

Step 03

Enter Your Information and Save it

After you chose the type of record you want to add, input all the necessary information into the app.

To add the website link:

1. Add URL link that you want to open when NFCKEY is tapped on a phone

In our case, we will be adding data for our website (https://www.nfckey.com/).

2. Double-check the spelling to ensure all details are accurate

3. Press Save & Write

Enter Your Information and Save it
Step 04

Write Data To Your NFCKEY

1. After you've pressed Save & Write, select options based on your needs on the next screen:

  • Write multiple NFC tags - if you are encoding multiple NFCKEYs
  • Confirm overwrite - allow the app to overwrite any existing data on the keychain with new data
  • Add launch application - add an app that launches when the NFCKEY is tapped on a phone

2. Press Write again

3. Hold your NFCKEY close to the phone’s NFC sensor (the sensor is typically on the back panel of the phone, right next to the camera)

4. Wait for confirmation that writing is complete

We recommend ticking Confirm overwrite so that new data replaces any existing data on the chip during encoding, rather than the write being blocked or old and new data both remaining on the tag.

Step 05

Test Your NFCKEY

Once you have written the chosen information on the NFC keychain, check its accuracy to see if any changes are required.

1. Tap your NFCKEY to your phone (like any other NFC card) or another NFC-enabled device

2. Check that all contact details or links open as programmed

3. If you notice that you made a mistake or want to change any information, proceed to Step 6. If not, you are done!

In our case, the link has been saved successfully and it appears on the phone screen when NFCKEY is tapped on the phone.

And you’re done!

You can rewrite the information on your wearable anywhere and anytime using the app and the NFCKEY.

Step 06

If Necessary: Edit Information

If you want to update the information or you notice that you made a mistake, you can easily do so in the same app.

Just repeat Steps 2-5 and ensure you tick Confirm Overwrite to overwrite any existing data.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. NFCKEY works with NFC-enabled iPhones (iPhone XS and newer) and most Android devices that support NFC. Make sure NFC is enabled in your phone settings before scanning.

iPhone: top back area, near the camera.

Android: usually on the back centre. The exact location varies by model.

Hold the NFCKEY against that area for 1 to 2 seconds.

Common causes:

  • NFC is turned off in your phone settings
  • The phone is not positioned correctly over the NFCKEY
  • The NFCKEY is too far from the NFC sensor
  • The NFCKEY is near a metal surface, which interferes with the signal
  • The tag has been permanently locked

Try repositioning and make sure NFC is enabled.

Yes. NFCKEY can be rewritten as many times as you want, unless it has been permanently locked. Open the app, go to My Datasets, edit the record, and write it to the NFCKEY again.

Storage depends on the chip type:

  • NTAG® 213 — 144 usable bytes (enough for links and short text)
  • NTAG® 215 — 504 usable bytes (larger contact cards)
  • NTAG® 216 — 888 usable bytes (maximum storage)

For most website links and standard contact cards, NTAG® 213 is enough.

Yes. NXP® TagWriter supports business cards, WiFi credentials, Bluetooth pairing, email, phone numbers, geo location, plain text, SMS and app launches. The process is the same for all record types — only the fields you fill in change.

Locking makes the data on your NFCKEY permanent. Once locked, the information cannot be edited or erased. Only lock your NFCKEY if you are certain the data will never need to change.

You need internet access to download the NXP® TagWriter app. After that, writing data to your NFCKEY does not require an internet connection — it works entirely over NFC between your phone and the keychain.

No. Programming is a digital operation that writes data to the chip inside. It has no effect on the physical keychain. NFCKEY is designed to IP68 ingress protection standards and features a self-repairing coating, so it remains durable regardless of how many times you reprogram it.
